Warner Bros Supposedly Considering Jon Hamm for Superman Role

Another internet news site has stirred up the Hamm-Superman rumored pairing, claiming the studio behind the superhero reboot is seriously pursuing the Mad Men actor to portray the Man of Steel.

Every since Warner Bros formally announced their vision for the next Superman movie, a vision that includes The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan working behind-the-scenes, the rumored casting of actor Jon Hamm with Clark Kent/Superman has resurfaced every few months. It appears to be one of the most popular casting rumors circulating today, especially amongst comic book fans.

Today, ThinkMcFlyThink released the following statements:

"Sources tell [us] one such actor being "seriously considered" is Mad Men star Jon Hamm.

"...keep in mind no deal is in place and there's no indication Hamm and/or his representation has met with WB, Legendary or the Nolan crew. He's one of several names being thrown around the Burbank offices to headline the new Superman franchise."

The next Superman film (which has yet to receive a formal title) is also rumored to have a theatrical release date of December 2012.

I truly find it hard to believe he would be considered for this with the franchise potential. A studio would want an actor for the long haul with sequels and potential JLA movie somewhere as well. I would think they would be targeting actors in late 20's to early 30's.

You mean someone like... Brandon Routh?

He is what 39, dunno if this will work, but I have never seen Mad Men so I can not say anything

Routh certainly fills the bill as for looks, age bracket and dare I say it...acting ability. He has done some good stuff with Chuck and Scott Pilgrim. No way the studio takes him on though, too much baggage.

As long as they dont bring back Kate Bosworth

I actually prefer an older Superman instead of some 20 year old Abercrombie and Fitch model.
Someone with a big build but also looks like years of fighting crime have taken their toll on him.
Someone who looks like he is filled with much wisdom and experience.

ThinkMcFlyThink also claimed that Rose Byrne was up for Carol Ferris a while back... which was disappointingly untrue Sad So take this with a grain of salt.

I haven't seen much of Jon Hamm, but I'd almost like to see him get a shot. He could really stand out as the patriarch of the DCU if they went this way.

He would work. People can be digitally de-aged if need be, say for a couple of future films. He certainly has the acting ability and look, he would just need to hit the gym a bit to broaden his shoulders and chest. But there's no doubt in my mind he could do it.

Routh I think is too wooden. While I think he made a good Clark Kent, I think he made for a weak looking Superman. He didn't inspire me with confidence at all. I agree with what Gaston said, no more magazine models as superheroes. I also want someone who's age and posture and look reflect wisdom and power.

Hmm..This is a very interesting development. I can see Jon play the mature superman type. He has the looks spot on and has the build to put on extra muscle. However, I think it is safer to find a younger actor for the role since Supes may make appearances in a JLA film or a Green Lantern sequel (cross fingers). I always thought Henry Cavil would make a great Supes if Routh is not up for the role anymore.

I don't get the Henry Cavil thing... if we're going for young actors who aren't Routh or Welling, I think Matt Bomer really has the look (if he bulked up a bit), and we know at one point he was up for the role.

IDK bro, I just don't see Matt as Supes, he looks a bit too young compared to Cavil. Cavil is a pretty talented actor. I do not know much of Bomer's films yet, but I remain hopeful for Cavil. Though we can not predict who will be Supes yet. He is a very difficult character to cast just like Captain America was. I think Warner Bros. is gonna surprise us with an unknown.

Yeah, unknown always seems the way to go Tongue

Yeah Big Grin Just like they did with Routh. I did not know jack about him but now I refer to him as that Superman dude.

I would rather have a Superman that looks about 30 or in his early 30's than some fresh young looking Superman.

There's nothing wrong with underwear on the outside... I honestly think he'd look stranger without it.

Ok, John! But I think underwear on the outside wouldn't fit well in a future and possible movie like JUSTICE LEAGUE.

Jon Hamm is only 6'0" tall. How would they work this? CGI?

Are you implying that this is a problem because Ryan Reynolds is taller?

They've got a man who dresses in bat pajamas and an Amazon warrior who parades around half naked. I think red undies would be the most normal thing you'll see any of the JL members wear.

Isn't RDJ 45?? Stare Yeah, exactly!! Watch Mad Men if you have a chance, it is really good. Not the best show critics make it at to be, I kinda think is a bit overacted, but Jon Hamm is the fucking [crap]! He is soooo good in the show. Hamm look so much like the Alex Ross Superman. However, good chance they might go with a younger guy like say Henry Carvill.

I could care less if the guy is 39. I'd rather have an older looking Supes than babyface Routh again. I never felt like I was watching a Superman movie, cause it seemed like I was watching a high school kid in Superman pajamas. Not a fan.

Nothing like a little bit of Superman rumor to stir the pot and disturb the hornets' nest. Gaston and gtrman are correct about Routh, underwear models, and older men. Eek
Boy did that sound strange...

Shaman

Jon Hamm should get an audition as much as Brandon Routh. May the best man win! I'd be okay with either of them as long as it's not Welling. If Jon gets it though, WB'll have to focus on an experienced Superman vs the idea of retconning the character's origins. An origin wasn't important for TIH and i don't see how essential it could be for Supes. But he'll have to commit to being Supes a good long while. Just like RDJ is doing for Tony.

dnno1

dnno1's picture

No, because Superman should be at least 6'3" tall has he has always been in the comics.

Ranger14

Superman needs to be a physically imposing character. Short in stature don't cut it. The body needs to be larger in stature. Bomer, Cavill, Hamm, don't cut it. Routh is a crappy and uninspired actor. From what I have been told, Routh and Cavill are not an option.

I think 39 is pushing the age if they want to do any continuity and Hamm look his age, if not older. I would like to see a 30-34 year old Superman.

This rumor/story was out there a couple months ago. Don't know why some sites are just picking up on it now.
