It appears that the filming taking place today in England plays a pivotal role in the creation of the Star Spangled Avenger in Marvel Studios' Captain America movie. Find the video and details after the jump.
Before Marvel Studios unleashes their ensemble superhero film, The Avengers, in 2012, fans around the world will get the opportunity to see two more of the team's heroes star in their own solo films. Thor has already entered the post production process; where the director and crew will spend the next several months editing footage and adding special effects in preparation for the film's May 6th, 2011 theatrical release. The cameras have only recently began rolling for Captain America: The First Avenger throughout scattered UK filming locations. The movie is a period piece set during World War II, with modern day scenes bookending the story, with Chris Evan portraying the title character who becomes the Star Spangled Avenger:
A brave, yet mild-mannered young soldier named Steve Rogers volunteers to undergo a series of experiments for the secretive, US Army Super Soldier Program. The military succeeds in transforming him into a human weapon, but quickly decide that their Super Soldier is far too expensive a creation to risk in combat. They decide to put him to use as an Army celebrity and parade him across Europe USO shows for American troops in an effort to boost morale. He is even given a costume which bears the colors of Old Glory for the stage. When a Nazi plot reveals itself, Rogers must rise up and and become the First Avenger, in order to save his country. Captain America earns his way into the hearts and souls of every American, bringing hope and justice to a war-weary nation. Later, during a mission to Germany to stop his archenemy - The Red Skull, from launching rockets at the allies, Captain America must decide whether to make the ultimate sacrifice to save the world from destruction.
The City of Manchester has gone through a drastic transformation to mimic the look and feel of New York City circa the 1940s. Today's filming appears to reveal a central aspect in the Captain America mythology:
Is this a standalone shootout taking place in the streets of Brooklyn, New York; or something more? According to Marvel Comics mythology, an unassuming "curio shop" was the headquarters of Project: Rebirth; the branch of Weapons Plus responsible for the Super Soldier Program. This secretive location is where Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), a fugitive German scientist, performs his experiments that transform Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) into Captain America. Immediately after the experiment concludes, Dr. Erskine is gunned down by a Nazi agent named Heinz Kruger; who infiltrated the top-secret facility during Rogers' transformation presentation. Attempting to flee the scene after the the assassination, Krugar and his accomplices are pursued and gunned down.
Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci, Haley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Dominic Cooper Toby Jones and Neal McDonough. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on July 22nd, 2011.
