New Ryan Gosling Flick BLUE VALENTINE Scores NC-17 Rating

The MPAA has decided to give the upcoming drama Blue Valentine the ratings kiss of death by delivering it an NC-17 rating because of a scene that causes 'discomfort.'

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star in the upcoming film that is about a couple's marriage dissolving and their struggle to keep it alive. The scene in particular that is garnering attention doesn't contain any nudity or excessive language but the MPAA found it uncomfortable to watch and stuck the film with the harsh rating because of that reason alone. Warner: Minor Spoiler Ahead.

The scene which is causing a stir deals with Gosling and Williams spending the night in a hotel with Williams' character refusing to be intimate with Gosling's character but does so anyways to avoid confrontation. This results in some sort of sequence which is very uncomfortable to watch, but that's it. There is no gratuitous nudity or language during the scene, it's just difficult to get through.

The Weinstein Company will most likely appeal the decision considering the NC-17 rating was slapped onto a film that contains none of the other factors that would normally contribute to this edgy rating.

No one knows what the sequence is? Just...an "uncomfortable moment"?

Wow. There have been "rape" scenes before that have recieved an "R" rating. Which is the big elephant in the room that is being suggested, I think.

i don't know - it has to be "different" though in order to score that rating due to it's "uncomfortable" nature. That friggen Killer Inside Me" movie with Casey Affleck was R - and it had tons of what I thought were "uncomfortable" scenes that didn't have nudity or swearing.
