Lena Headey Set to Play Villain in the Upcoming Film DREDD
The actress, most notably remembered for her performances in Zack Snyder's 300 and the TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles will play opposite Karl Urban in the sci-fi remake.
Currently filming in South Africa, DREDD has garnered another addition to its main cast. Lena Headey will portray the comics character Madeline Madrigal, aka Ma-Ma. Though the studio has yet to confirm the casting directly, the information was released by a reliable source of all things DREDD. Here's a brief description of her role in the film, courtesy of Bleeding Cool:
In the Dredd script she’s described as a woman in her late fifties or early sixties with a big scar through her cheek and lip. I can imagine they’ll just ignore the first part of that description, and the only make up Ms. Headey will be subject to will provide the scar tissue but not age her.
Ma-Ma is the leader of a gang who over run the Peach Tree City Block. Almost all of the film takes place here, an extended action sequence not too dissimilar, I guess, to the Die Hard paradigm.
DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot - if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Pete Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra's revered comic strip.
