SCOOP: New Details About S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Presence in Marvel Studios' THE AVENGERS

New details about the clandestine organization that plays a pivotal role in the upcoming ensemble superhero film have been passed along by a source working on it's New Mexico set.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, Marvel’s The Avengers brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time. Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel’s The Avengers is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

The Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division -- also known as S.H.I.E.L.D. -- has been the "glue" binding the Marvel Cinematic Universe together; but with The Avengers, fans will get to see the clandestine organization at full strength. A source close to the film's production has shared a few tidbits of information regarding their upgraded presence in the project:

- The film is chock full of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (most wearing the standard black suit while others wear specialized outfits) with the most prominent given names from Marvel Comics mythology including: Alexander Goodwin Pierce, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wendell Vaughn, Jasper Sitwell, Clay Quartermain, Jack Truman, Abigail Brand, Larry Young & Jimmy Woo.

- Along with the famous headquarters airship known as the Helicarrier, S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will be piloting a more tactical aircraft; though it is unknown whether it will be The Avengers' Quinjet or the yellow/red S.H.I.E.L.D. "Flying Car"

- Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) will finally get his time to shine while leading a S.H.I.E.L.D. force during the film's penultimate battle scene

- S.H.I.E.L.D. agents will brandish plenty of "future tech" weaponry including a modified plasma sidearm and accompanying shoulder-fired rifle (more than likely to help with the PG-13 rating). Though it is unknown how much of a presence they will have, several cosmic artifacts will be reasoning behind the creation of these weapon systems.

Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man, Iron Man 2) returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth (Thor) as Thor, Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) as Captain America, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are Alright) as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson (Iron Man 2) as Black Widow, Clark Gregg (Iron Man, Thor) as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson (Iron Man, Iron Man 2) as Nick Fury. Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, Marvel’s The Avengers is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston (Wallander) and Stellan Skarsgård (Angels & Demons, Mamma Mia!) who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios’ feature Thor.

Wendell Vaughn, also known as Quasar. Read up on him and you'll see that he's sort of a Marvel response to Green Lantern (as is another of their big space characters, Nova: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nova_%28comics%29)
I'm curious to see if Marvel gets around to fully using either of these characters, now that Warner's made their Green Lantern film.

'Several cosmic artifacts'. Could one of them be the 'cube'? Maybe we'll see some stuff from Asgard's weapons vault. I still want to know how they're going to deal with the Thor-Jane Foster plotline that's left hanging. In spite of what's been said, could Foster have at least a cameo to clean that up?

I don't know about "several" cosmic artifacts, but the Thor after-credits scene indicates SHIELD could be using the Cosmic Cube the same way Red Skull uses it in Captain America (as a magical super battery, basically.) I wouldn't think they'd actually need something like that, since Tony Stark, if willing, would be capable of supplying them with all the miniature arc reactors they could need.

If they can't get Portman back for a cameo, they could at least have Thor take off to see Foster "off screen."

As for Odin's vault, I'm now pretty sure everything in there is Thor-specific, with the likely exception of the Infinity Gauntlet and the possible exception of the glowing "orb" thing. I put more detailed thoughts in the comments on this post: http://www.dailyblam.com/news/2011/05/13/marvel-releases-thor-movie-stil...
