Rowling, author of the bestselling Harry Potter book series which has sold almost 500 million copies worldwide, is venturing off into completely new territory for her next published work.
Harry Potter is a series of seven fantasy novels written by the British author J. K. Rowling. The books chronicle the adventures of the adolescent wizard Harry Potter and his quest to overcome the evil dark wizard Lord Voldemort, whose aim is to conquer the wizarding world and subjugate non-magical people, and who seeks to destroy all those who stand in his way including Harry's parents, his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, teachers and classmates. The award winning, best selling novels have been adapted into feature films by Warner Bros, which have amassed billions of dollars in box office profit and merchandising. Last year, Rowling revealed that she was going to continue the franchise's success with an interactive website called Pottermore; though at this time the site has no plans to open to the public.
Today Rowling confirmed that her next big project will be a novel completely independent from Harry Potter and geared towards adults. According to USA Today, the author has "signed a deal with a new publisher, the British and U.S. divisions of Little, Brown. No details -- including title, subject matter or release date -- of the new book were revealed, although that's promised later this year."
Rowling also made a statement regarding the new venture, expressing excitement but not touching upon any details, "Although I've enjoyed writing it every bit as much, my next book will be very different to the Harry Potter series... The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me, and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher. I am delighted to have a second publishing home in Little, Brown, and a publishing team that will be a great partner in this new phase of my writing life."
