Magnolia Pictures Acquires BEL AMI Starring Robert Pattinson; Set for June Release
The distributor negotiated the deal with Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, who will take charge of all other US media, and will open the drama -- which also stars Uma Thurman and Christina Ricci -- on Jun 8th, 2012.
Bel Ami is the story of Georges Duroy (Pattinson), who travels through 1890s Paris, from cockroach ridden garrets to opulent salons, using his wits and powers of seduction to rise from poverty to wealth, from a prostitute’s embrace to passionate trysts with wealthy beauties, in a world where politics and media jostle for influence, where sex is power and celebrity an obsession.
Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci and Colm Meaney star in the Guy de Maupassant adaptation about a manipulative young social climber in 19th century Paris. Bel Ami received its world premiere in Berlin last month. Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod directed from Rachel Bennette’s adapted screenplay. Uberto Pasolini produced and Simon Fuller of XIX Entertainment served as executive producer.
“Bel Ami is a well-crafted, appealing film with a terrific ensemble cast,” Magnolia president Eamonn Bowles said. “We think it’s a great fit for our Ultra VOD program.”
Magnolia SVP of acquisitions Dori Begley and head of business affairs Chris Matson negotiated the deal with SPWA’s EVP of business affairs Michael Helfand and VP acquisitions and distribution Tana Evans.
