Directed by Raja Gosnell, Smurfs 2 stars Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria and Sofía Vergara and features the voices of Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming and George Lopez. Sony Pictures Animation will release the film on July 31st, 2013.
In this sequel to the hybrid live action/animated family blockbuster comedy The Smurfs, the evil Gargamel creates a couple of mischievous Smurf-like characters called the Naughties that he hopes will let him harness the all-powerful, magical Smurf-essence. But when he discovers that only a real Smurf can give him what he wants - and only a secret spell that Smurfette knows can turn the Naughties into real Smurfs - Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette and brings her to Paris, where he has been winning the adoration of millions as the world's greatest sorcerer. It's up to Papa, Clumsy, Groucy and Vanity to return to our world, reunite with their human friends Patrick and Grace Winslow, and rescue her! Will Smurfette, who has always felt different from the other Smurfs, find a new connection with the Naughties Vexy and Hackus - or will the Smurfs convince her that their love for her is True Blue?
Says director Raja Gosnell about the two new characters: "They’re not bad, they’re misguided. They’re just products of their upbringing. And they haven’t had the best upbringing, let’s say. Vexy is smart, and mischievous and has lots of attitude. Attitude to spare. Hackus, he’s just very funny and very physical. He’s the Tasmanian Devil meets a lovable puppy dog.
"Smurfette was a lump of clay that Gargamel put in his cauldron and he painted her blue as a disguise. Using that as a jumping off point, our Naughties are basically clay gray. They want to please their father, like any child who just wants to do what’s expected of them. They don’t really know the whole story."
