The Walt Disney Company and their newly acquired LucasFilm arm are prepping to begin production on a new Star Wars film trilogy, of which the first film will be released in 2015.
Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine, Toy Story 3) is writing the screenplay for the highly anticipated next installment of the Star Wars franchise. No story details have been revealed, but it's confirmed the film will take place after the events of Return of the Jedi. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are all rumored to be reprising their characters of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia Organa, if only for small roles. Although a director has not been announced yet, plans are for the film to hit theaters in 2015 following Marvel Studios/Disney's The Avengers 2. Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan have signed on to write the additional episodes of the new trilogy.
In a recent interview, Drew Struzan -- the legendary artist whose posters are some of the most recognizable promotional art in pop culture -- revealed that his self-imposed retirement from Star Wars properties may not last:
"I got a couple calls already this week on Star Wars from Disney. Oh my god, I’m trying to be retired! You know, I spent 35 years painting Star Wars. [laughs] I painted Star Wars before most of you were born! But I guess there is always a chance. There’s no intention. But I would love to have a day off every now and again, and I have to work a weekend and all through the night.
"If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible.
Druzan's work has been used for many iconic franchises including Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and Harry Potter, but his Star Wars pieces (some of which is featured below) are the most highly sought out by collectors.
