Bryan Singer returns to the director's chair of the film franchise he helped launch in the upcoming sequel to last summer's X-Men: First Class, which is scheduled for theatrical release in 2014.
'Days of Future Past' is a Marvel Comics storyline published in 1981 that deals with a dystopian, alternative future in which mutants are hunted down by government controlled robots (Sentinels) and incarcerated in internment camps. An older Kitty Pryde transfers her mind into the younger, present-day Kitty Pryde, who brings the X-Men to prevent a fatal moment in history which triggers anti-mutant hysteria.
Jennifer Lawrence, fresh off her Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook, shared a few thoughts about returning to play the shape changing mutant Mystique (the role originated by Rebecca Romijn). Currently wrapping production on The Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, she revealed she won't have to endure 7+ hours of make up to don the blue body-paint her character is known for:
"I'm so excited because I'm going to wear a body suit. It will be from neck down so it will cut out time and the blisters. I haven't read the script yet. I haven't had 30 minutes. They literally gave me the script and I was like, 'I can't read this until Monday.'"
Halle Berry, who starred in the first three X-Men films as Storm, is also likely to reprise her role in the new film. There's no confirmation yet from the star or director Bryan Singer, but she says she is "90% sure" she's be returning.
X-Men: Days of Future Past stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Ellen Page, Shawn Ashmore, Anna Paquin, Peter Dinklage, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Bryan Singer (X-Men, X-Men 2, Superman Returns and Jack the Giant Slayer) will direct the film off a screenplay by Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, This Means War, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter). Production is set to begin this Spring in Canada. 20th Century Fox has scheduled the film for theatrical release on July 18th, 2014.
