Monster director Patty Jenkins is being considered for Marvel Studios' follow-up to the hit film starring Chris Hemsworth and new details unveil more worlds to be discovered as well as the return of Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins.
Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, "Thor," which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster, has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
The sequel to Thor is tentatively scheduled to commence filming next April for a theatrical release in July, 2013. Patty Jenkins helmed the 2003 Academy Award winning serial killer biopic, which launched Charlize Theron to an Oscar. She has also directed several TV shows, including AMC's The Killing pilot. Although nothing is confirmed, sources say talks are ongoing between Jenkins and Marvel.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also dropped some plot details for the follow-up saying the sequel will "take Thor literally to other worlds." Feige also said that Thor 2 will "primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and how the new dynamic with his father (Odin, played by Anthony Hopkins) is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds."
The next time fans can see the character of Thor, will be in the upcoming superhero blockbuster The Avengers as Hemsworth reprises the role for a second time. That film is scheduled to be unleashed May, 2012.
