The sequel to the Robert Rodriguez directed, Danny Trejo starring mock-trailer turned full-fledged exploitation flick now has financier AR Films on board to produce.
Negotiations have already begun to bring back "Machete" himself Danny Trejo and the rest of the cast -- those whose characters are still alive -- back into the fold in order to begin production this April. The original gorefest cost $10.5 million and garnered a respectable $44 million return at the worldwide box office. The will be the first U.S. movie to be financed by AR Films' Alexander Rodnyansky in partnership with international distributor Aldamisa Entertainment, who will handle the overseas market.
The new film will find the titular character recruited by the U.S. government to take on a Mexican drug cartel with an army and an eccentric arms dealer with a space-based weapon with which he will rage war across the globe. Dismemberment, evisceration, death, and more await all those who come between the antihero and his mission.
“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”
Robert Rodriguez will return to direct and produce Machete Kills alongside Quick Draw productions and Alexander Rodnyansky. Kyle Ward has written the script which has been retooled by the director and his brother Marcel Rodriguez.
Machete (Danny Trejo) a renegade former Mexican Federale, roaming the streets of Texas after a shakedown from drug lord Torrez (Steven Seagal). Reluctantly, Machete takes an offer from spin doctor Benz (Jeff Fahey) to assassinate McLaughlin (Robert De Niro) a corrupt Senator. Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Cheech Marin) his “holy” brother, and April (Lindsay Lohan) a socialite with a penchant for guns. All while being tracked by Sartana (Jessica Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger.
