Director Spike Lee's English language adaptation of the Korean psychological thriller manga property is prepping to begin production this September with Josh Brolin (Men in Black 3) in the lead role.
A man kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday is held captive for fifteen years. Upon his release he embarks on an obsessive mission to find the reason for his imprisonment and soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than solitary confinement.
No Country for Old Men and Men in Black 3 star Josh Brolin is set to play the lead role of Joe Douchett in Spike Lee's English language adaptation of Old Boy for Mandate Pictures. Elizabeth Olsen, star of last year's indie psychological thriller Martha Marcy May Marlene , has reportedly been offered to play the part of a caseworker who investigates Douchett's past. Shartlo Copley has now been announced to play the film's villain Adrian Pryce, a "mysterious billionaire trying to destroy the life of Douchett". Last year, The King's Speech star Colin Firth was rumored to have been the lead contender for the role.
Production on Old Boy, now a two word title like the Manga series as opposed to the original film adaptation, will begin in September. The original South Korean Oldboy was released in 2004 to critical acclaim with Quentin Tarantino heavily pushing for the movie to take home top honors at the Cannes Film Festival to no success. The Park Chan-wook movie has since become a cult classic, known for it's violence, strange original premise and shocking twist.
