The fifth season of Showtime's Emmy award winning series Dexter is set to return September 26th. Hints and new images have been released to tease what promises to be a dramatic follow up after last season's shocking finale.

Season Four Spoilers throughout from here on:

Producer Sara Colleton gave some hints earlier this year on what to expect from the upcoming season's debut episode and how everybody's favorite serial killer, Dexter Morgan, played by the amazing Michael C. Hall, is set to pick up the pieces dealing with the loss of his wife Rita.

"We uniformly decided that we don’t want to jump ahead. We need to see Dexter go through the process that we’d all have to go through if such a horrible thing had happened to us,"

"We need to see him doing everything from the big emotional things like grieving the loss, to the mundane things like arranging a funeral, getting the kids dressed, and all the other things that are usually done for men because their wives or mothers do them," said Colleton.

Season Five is hinted to deal with the loss of Rita, Dexter's wife, who was played by Julie Benz, in the opening episode but it apparently doesn't take long for Dexter to get back to his old ways in episode two. After John Lithgow's Emmy award winning performance as a rival serial killer in season four, it has been hinted that multiple enemies will appear in the new season.

“John Lithgow is a tough act to follow. If there was ever a year that we could take a step back from the Big Bad formula and go deeper into Dexter and his psychology, this would be that year," said Colleton.

"That said, Dexter has a dark passenger that won’t go away no matter how much he yearns to be normal. That rears up and needs to be dealt with. He may even dive deeper after this traumatic loss of Rita," said Colleton.

Colleton also talked about the possibiliy of bringing in another romantic interest into the fold.

"Anything is possible, but I don’t think Dexter will be in the mood for dating or love anytime soon. That’s not even on our radar right now," she said.

Also of interesting note, Michael C. Hall was going through cancer treatment during the filming of season four but is in full remission now and things are looking up for the actor.

In case you've missed it, here's the trailer for Dexter Season Five, which premieres Sunday, September 26 only on Showtime.

DUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!! Fell in love with this show, thanks to my brother. I was so repulsed by the concept (as described to me) until I watched it. Watched Season 4 for the first time on Showtime then backtracked with Netflix to the previous shows. Great television! It doesn't get any better. Though, anyone who hasn't seen it, mind you, its "Showtime". That means boobs and language.

WOW! Eek This season is going to be intense! I started watching last season as well, and I got so hooked! I borrowed all the past seasons from my friend and watched them, and this show is so damn good. I was so shocked with the finale to last season. Poor Rita. I can't wait for this to start. John Lithgow was so good last season as Trinity, sad he won't be back.

P.S. Glad to know Michael C. Hall is recovering well. I was wishing him the best and I still do. Smile

Great find Keven!

The scene where Dexter is dragging John Lithgow with his belt in front of Lithgow's family and gets the kitchen knife and says to John "I should have fucking killed you a long time ago" was the most intense/bad ass scene I have ever seen on a show lol.

P.S. I also too was shocked by the end of the last season. I yelled out "are you fucking kidding me?" when he saw her in the tub. I almost cried. Sad, I know lol.

LOL. I would be lying if I said I didn't shed a tear or two watching that ending. It was so sad seeing the baby on the floor in the blood, Rita in the tub, the flashbacks to his childhood and the look on Dexter's face as he held their baby during that finale monologue. I cried, I admit it. LOL. Laughing out loud
